WHY WE LOVE IT We love smart takes on classic science-fiction mythos and who better to take advantage of the iconography of H.G. Wells and War of the Worlds than Dan Abnett, one of comics' most renowned sci-fi writers and one of creators responsible for the groundbreaking run on Guardians of the Galaxy that inspired the upcoming Marvel movie. Paired with I.N.J. Culbard who has made a name for himself with the critically acclaimed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, it's a team perfectly built for the visually impactful adventure stories readers love.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT Inspired by the sci-fi aesthetic of War of the Worlds and the anthropomorphic characters of Blacksad and Mouse Guard, readers will be blown away by Culbard's art while fans of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's Cornetto Trilogy (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, WORLD'S END) will fall in love with Clive, Peter, and Gilbert as they try to survive an alien invasion.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT When a rural English community of the 1930s is the victim of an alien invasion, the residents' lives are upended by the harsh realities of life-and-death violence. Led by the town's outsider and retired war veteran, they will have to rally together to uncover the secret of their invaders and ultimately fight back.

Interesting read. Not my favorite, personally. But I think a lot of people out there may actually like it.

Wild End #1 Wilds End eBook Dan Abnett INJ Culbard Reviews

Wells' "War of the Worlds" Martians invade Grahame's "Wind in the Willows." So... that's not exactly what happens, but you get the idea. Mechanical invaders versus anthropomorphized animals in an Edwardian setting.

It's not just a genre mashup, though. It's actually a complex, well-told, and tremendously charming book. There's a lot of depth here, working as a foundation for humor, adventure, and tragedy. I have a difficult time categorizing the book, but the story is fantastic, the art is beautiful and perfectly fits the mood, and it's one of the most enjoyable books I've read in recent memory. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Seems promising so far. My only issue with this issue was how short it was. I am looking forward to the next one.
My guy called the book “The War of the Wind in the Willows” (seems to be a common reaction) and he’s not wrong. But the characters make this series a must read - esp. now that I'm seeing a possible third and concluding volume for summer 2018!

In a small British town populated by anthropomorphic animals, the town drunks see a falling star and head through the woods to investigate. Retired military officer Clive Slipaway, a newcomer, attends a town meeting the next day. It’s interrupted by one of those drunks, who claims the town is being invaded. Clive decides to investigate, and what he and other townsfolk find is terrifying.

Clive is a quiet tactician whose past causes him deep pain. Susan is a reclusive writer with a sharp tongue. Gilbert is the town solicitor and a jolly busybody. Fawkes is a formerly drunk layabout called to action. You start to care about them, even knowing that Bad Things Will Happen. I’ve rarely felt such a building sense of dread while reading as in this first volume, especially in the nighttime scenes.
I first decided to read this work because of its unique concept; I mean, who WOULDN'T want to pick up a comic that merges H.G Wells-style science fiction with anthropomorphic animal characters? That concept could have come off as bizarre, but Wild's End does a masterful job with it. The story is gripping and full of twists and turns. In fact, I couldn't put it down and read it all in one go (it's six chapters long in total). Just because the story involves animals, don't expect it to be all cute and cuddly though! Death might be lurking on the very next page! The English-village setting is perfect and also adds some humor at times (although the work is serious on the whole). I love that the characters are animals, since it makes the work so much more visually interesting, and the art is well-done too. Overall, it definitely exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to read the sequel!
This is just superb storytelling and great art. You will not be disappointed.
